An Internet Directory, or Web Directory is a categorised listing of sites on the World Wide Web. Each site that is listed has a link from the directory to the listed site. A directory is NOT a search engine, it does not display lists of web pages based on keywords. The directory lists the web sites by category and subcategory. SItes are categorised in general terms. that is the catogory assigned is based on the contents across the web site, not just a single page or a set of keywords. There is an ongoing debate over the quality and usefulness of Internet Directories.
Directory submissions are probably the fastest and easiest way to obtain some inbound links. Because Internet directories link to thousands of other websites, the value that they can add to your Page Rank gets diluted by all the other links.
The one must-submit-to directory is The Open Project Directory (www.dmoz.org). Be warned however that you may wait for some time for your submission to be accepted or rejected. DMOZ is edited by volunteers, and checking of submissions does not occur on a regular basis, it is at the will of the editor.
After this, it is best to search for smaller niche or local directories. Submitting your website to Canadian, Ontario, and even Windsor web directories will help let the search engines know which region(s) you are servicing. Then, you should submit to industry related directories to indicate to the search engines your line of business. A Google search can help you find these types of directories.
A large number of directories are very general and provide a large list of categories covering a wide range of topics. There are also a number of niche, or specialist directories, these may be focussed on specialist topic area, or particular geographial regions. and sites are often limited to inclusion in only one or two categories. In order to become indluded in any of the Web directories, site owners submit their site directly for inclusion, and the submission reviewed for acceptance in to the directory.
When preparing to submit a site for submission an appropriate directort, must first be identified. Next within the directory the appropriate category and subcategory for the site listing must be specified. At this point the submission process can begin.
Directories have various types of listings, often dependent upon the price paid for inclusion. A number of directories offer more than one alternative, but with a different set of restrictions:
Many directories are human edited directories. These directories are maintained by editors who add or remove listings based on the policies for that directory. Some directories may prevent search engines from rating a displayed link by using redirects, nofollow attributes, or other techniques. A number of directories, including the Open Directory Project, are edited by volunteers, who are often experts in particular categories. These directories are fequently criticised due to long delays in approving submissions.
The paid for inclusion method of submission enables the directory to offer timely inclusion for submissions, these generally have fewer number listings in the directory as a result of the pay for inclusion.
