SIte promotion is not the most straight forward of tasks. Having the right people help you with your site promotion is a good idea. Even if use a professional submitter, you should know the basics of site promotion.

Firstly there is a great deal of misleading, inaccurate and just plain fraudulent information available. Some businesses promoting Web sites are shysters and scam artists. Many a Web site owner has paid big money to some sharpie who made wild promises, only to get little or nothing for their money. You should at least know the following terms;

Traffic - The number of visitors to a website. The more visitors the better. Whether selling online, putting out company information, or anything else, more traffic means more potential sales. If a Web site is not promoted, the traffic will probably hover around zero.

Hits - Not to be cofused with traffic. This is the number of times the web server is accessed. This includes accessed to pull the page code, the graphics, the CSS file, and any other files on the server.

Promotion - Anything that can be done to increase site traffic. This includes site submission, advertising, sending out press releases, etc.

Submission - The process of notifying the various search engines and related sites about your Web site.

Search Engines - These are sites that people use to search for information on the Web. This is the main way that people find Web sites. Web site owners should know as much as possible about search engines and how they work. Read more about Search Engines

One of the key parts of site promotion is establishing your credibility on the web. The way of doing this is for other websites to link to yours. This is known as Link building.
